What is the Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS)? —Ansherina

The Yale Young Global Scholar (YYGS) program is a two-week summer program for outstanding high school students from all around the world. The year I participated in the program, there were only three sessions but the program is expanding rapidly every year. I am sure every one of you will find great interest in at least one of the sessions.  The program takes place at Yale University, in New Haven CT.

Yes, no matter where you come from, you can absolutely apply. The program encourages diversity and wants to attract students from as many countries as possible!

Where can we find the application form? —Darlene

You will go through the whole application process online. But, applications are closed for now. They will be reopened in November ( as far as the 2015 session goes).

What was your most valuable lesson from your time at Yale? —Vijay

The most valuable lesson I have learned is to always look at the complete spectrum of ideas before making up your own mind. YYGS scholar is a very competitive program and I can understand why: In fact, as surprising as it might seem, a few of the people I have met there knew more about my country and my culture than I did myself. It has been very humbling to build such friendships.

How was your experience in the program? —Jailyn

I have had a wonderful experience as a YYGS scholar. Every person I have met: staff member, students, lecturers, and professors has changed me and made me a better person because I am more aware of what is happening around me and I learned to never judge people before really knowing them. All the students I have met had an incredible background story that made them become YYGS scholars!

What is the "letter of recommendation"? —Darlene

A letter of recommendation is a reference letter usually written by one of your teachers, preferably a teacher who knows you very well and knows your personality, in which he or she assesses your qualities, capacities and says why you would be a good fit for the YYGS scholar session you are applying for.

What are the requirements? —Hachem

To apply to YYGS scholar you need to be between 15 and 17 and have one or two years left of high school. This is a list of other requirements as stated on the official YYGS scholar website: resume / activity list, official school transcript, two letters of recommendation, unofficial standardised test scores, if available (these are not required) one 500 word essay and two 200 word responses.

On a more personal level, YYGS scholar is looking for students who are absolutely passionate about the subject area they are applying for. Your application must reflect your true personality and why you really want to become a YYG scholar. Your essays are a very important part of the application. My advice is that you start early and write as many drafts as you can until you perfect your essays.

What is an official school transcript? —Sekar

An official school transcript is your list of grades and subjects. You can get that at your school administration.
